See it to believe it! Discover the unique mix of Coral Gables’ modern architectural heritage. Covering several blocks, this bus/walking tour will feature several glass and concrete structures including Brutalist and Neo-Brutalist commercial buildings designed by prominent local, national, and international architects during a 20-year span from 1960s through the 1980s.

This walking tour will focus on several signature campus buildings, including the School of Architecture, the Merrick Building, and the Dooly Memorial Classroom Building, the Cox Science Center, and the Whitten Student Center. It will culminate at the Richter Library with a private tour of two extraordinary University archives: the university’s Special Collections, and the Cuban Heritage Collection.

Nestled along the iconic tree-lined streets of Coconut Grove is one of Alfred Browning Parker’s few remaining masterpieces, a one-of-a-kind “Jewel in the Treetop,” home he built for himself. The home was recently purchased by a new owner who plans to carry forward the legacy of the property and has graciously agreed to open the doors for a small group of Symposium guests on Thursday evening. This exclusive evening event will also feature the home of Parker's son, architect Robin Parker, and a reception at Tigertail, another important example of Florida Regionalism.

South Florida is home to a distinct form of local modernism pioneered by Architect Alfred Browning Parker. Establishing his practice in the 1940s, Parker gained international attention by incorporating South Florida's unique geology into Modernist architecture and, at times, through the hands of his own personal craftsmanship. Participants will walk at least four of the most-intact Parker homes still standing

BUS TOUR | Take a drive up the northeast coast of the city along historic Route 1/Biscayne Boulevard to experience Miami’s dynamic arts and cultural scenes and see some of the major highlights of Miami Modernism (MiMo). Starting at the Pérez Art Museum, the tour will travel to the Wynwood Arts District, the Miami Design District, and the MiMo Biscayne Boulevard Historic District, stopping at significant sites along the way such as the Buckminster Fuller’s “Fly Eye” Dome, the Bakehouse Art Complex, Vagabond Motel, Bacardi Headquarters (now Young Arts) and Gumenick Chapel.

Join us for an urban exploration of Miami’s heart. Miami’s incredible building stock, stretching from the 1920’s building boom through to the present day is on full display with special attention paid to Postmodern works of Arquitectonica, Philip Johnson, Claes Oldenburg, Edward Durell Stone, and others.

In the first half of this tour, particpants will explore the typology and architecture of the hotel rows and residential quarters of South Beach, interpreted as a Mediterranean Deco-Modern “alphabet city.” From the concert hall and rooftop garden of Frank Gehry’s New World Symphony, the second portion of the tour follows the pedestrian ribbon of Lincoln Road all the way to the tropical-brutalist finale of the 1111 parking garage by Herzog & deMeuron. Along the road, we will discuss the works of Morris Lapidus, Lawrence Murray Dixon, Igor Polevitzky’s Albion Hotel, West 8’s Soundscape park at Collins Avenue, etc.

Despite being a city best known for its Art Deco architecture, Miami Beach is home to an incredible collection of postwar Modern buildings and structures. North Beach has one of the largest and most cohesive concentrations of Miami Modern (MiMo) buildings, nearly 700, in South Florida. They include landmark hotels, commercial buildings, and garden-style apartment buildings. North Beach neighborhoods also incorporate other architectural styles, including Mediterranean Revival, Art Deco, and Moderne – all blending together to give a distinctively urban character to this northern part of Miami Beach. 

Participants will walk at least four of the most-intact Parker homes still standing, including what was once Miami-Dade County's largest waterfront property (the 1951 Caudle Residence) and an active construction site (the 1951 Baros Residence) to see an on-going restoration efforts. 

BUS TOUR | This day-long tour highlights the remarkable diversity and creativity of the midcentury architectural styles in Fort Lauderdale and beyond. The majority of the tour is spent in Fort Lauderdale where Midcentury Modern was the predominant style as the city came of age after World War II. The tour is bookended by two noted landmarks associated with architect Marcel Breuer: the Broward County Library in Fort Lauderdale (1980-84) and the former IBM corporate campus in Boca Raton (1968), now the Boca Raton Innovation Center (BriC).
